Wine Finds: Italian wines for seafood and white sauces | Food and cooking

If you’re planning a dinner of white pizza or pasta with an alfredo sauce, consider pairing your meal with an Italian white wine. Although pinot grigio might be the first wine to come to mind, the country is home to many other delicious whites. The following are two that might be unfamiliar to you: turbiana, a relative of the better known verdicchio grape, and vermentino, which can often taste like sauvignon blanc.

Cà Maiol 2020, Lugana, Italy

Bought • Costco, 4200 Rusty Road, in February for $11.59

Description • Cà Maiol is a brand owned by the Santa Margherita-Gruppo Vinicolo, which also produces the popular Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio. Bright and delicate, this dry white comes from Lugana, an appellation located just to the south of Italy’s largest lake, Lago di Garda, partly in Veneto and partly in Lombardy. Made from turbiana grapes, this is a light-bodied, mineral-driven wine that has a mouthwatering acidity. It has a floral aroma and tastes of peaches and apricots with a touch of almond. It can be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif wine or with raw fish and seafood-based dishes.

Argiolas 2020 Costamolino, Vermentino de Sardegna, Italy

Bought • Costco, 4200 Rusty Road, in February for $11.99

Description • For a bigger white, try this delicious vermentino that received 91 points from Wine Enthusiast. It comes from the island of Sardinia, located about 120 miles west of the mainland of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea. The family owned Argiolas, which was founded in 1938, is one of Sardinia’s largest wineries. Made from 100% vermentino, this is a very aromatic, medium- to full-bodied white with lots of character. Crisp and tangy, it tastes of zesty citrus fruit along with juicy apricots and peaches and a touch of herbs. It’s best enjoyed with food including Mediterranean style grilled fish and seafood.
