Turing Award winners endorse Biden, say Trump immigration policy will stifle tech research
Twenty-four winners of the Turing Award are endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election, The New York Times reported, explaining they’re concerned the Trump administration’s immigration policies could be detrimental to both computer research and the technology industry over the long term. “The most brilliant people in the world want to come here and be grad students, but now they are being discouraged from coming here, and many are going elsewhere,” David Patterson, a Google distinguished engineer and former professor at the University of California, Berkeley told the Times. Among the names on the endorsement are Vint Cerf, who co-designed TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of…

General announces Iraq, Afghanistan troop drawdowns as Trump looks to fulfill campaign pledge
McKenzie announced the Iraq withdrawal during a ceremony for Operation Inherent Resolve, the global coalition to defeat the Islamic State militants, with Iraq’s minister of defense. The decision to reduce the U.S. level to 3,000 troops over the next month was based on conditions on the ground, and has been in the works for months, said defense officials who requested anonymity to discuss future operations. The news comes as Trump faces backlash over allegations that he called U.S. troops “losers” and “suckers,” and as he trails his opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, in the polls just weeks ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election. The announcements also come two…

Federal prosecutors file new charges against associate of Trump backer Rudy Giuliani
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Federal prosecutors said on Thursday they had filed additional charges against Lev Parnas, a one-time associate of President Donald Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, who was already facing campaign finance-related charges. Prosecutors said they had charged Parnas and an associate, David Correia, with conspiring to defraud investors in an insurance company they operated. Prosecutors said a superseding indictment also includes fresh campaign finance law violations. Audrey Strauss, acting chief federal prosecutor in Manhattan, said that Parnas and David Correia, one of three co-defendants charged with Parnas in an indictment the prosecutor’s office issued in 2019, were charged in a superseding indictment with conspiring to commit wire fraud…

Claim on Trump nepotism, family profiting from presidency is partly false
The claim: Trump’s relatives and close associates have been given government roles and profited from the presidency Just days after the Trump family took the stage and praised their patriarch at the Republican National Convention, liberals took a closer look at the Trump family’s ties to the presidency. On Aug. 26, Ridin’ with Biden, a Facebook page dedicated to the election of Democrat Joe Biden, posted a meme that calls the roles of Trump relatives and associates into question. “Trump’s daughter works at the White House,” claims the meme. “Her husband works at the White House. Rudy’s son works at the White House. Barr’s son-in-law works at the White House. Barr’s daughter works…

Retired Pierce County general goes viral with Trump comments
A retired U.S. Army general and Pierce County resident has seen a viral response to a video he made criticizing President Trump for disparaging comments about dead and wounded U.S. service members. In a video posted to his Twitter account on Sept. 3, retired Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton told Trump he’s “no patriot.” The video has since received over 4 million views. Eaton posted the video as a response to a report in The Atlantic which said Trump allegedly called U.S. service members buried in a French cemetery “losers.” The report also said Trump asked a military parade to exclude wounded veterans because “nobody wants to see” amputees. “You have…

Trump is touting Opportunity Zones as a huge success with no proof
LOUISVILLE — In more than 15 separate public appearances since the protests over George Floyd’s death began, President Donald Trump has touted the success of his administration’s Opportunity Zones program, claiming it has created “tens of thousands of jobs” in poor Black communities across the U.S. But those who track the tax-break program say such claims are impossible to prove, and that the bulk of the investments to date have gone to real estate deals that do not produce long-term jobs. A recent White House report on the program estimates $75 billion has been raised nationwide for Opportunity Zone investments but the White House has been unable to provide a…
