What Is Life Coaching?
A life coach partners with their clients to inspire them and help them reach their professional and personal potential. Life coaching is not consulting, nor is it psychotherapy.
Life coaches can meet with their clients virtually, in person, or over the phone. Most sessions are between 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the arrangement.
Professional coaches use questions and experiences to identify their client’s issues and then help them resolve them. The basis of life coaching is neuroscience. It is a field that has years of research behind it.
What Life Coaching Is Not
Personal life coaching is not a tool to treat mood disorders, mental illnesses, or emotional disorders. While having someone available to advise you can be helpful, it shouldn’t replace getting actual help for any mental health issues you may be battling.
Life coaches do not provide personal opinions on their client’s problems or issues or tell their clients what they can and cannot do.
Life coaches improve their client’s mindsets by helping them envision future success and offering guidance on taking steps now to achieve that success. Psychotherapy focuses on emotions and understanding how the past relates to the present. Life coaching focuses on the future.
In some cases, a life coach may deal with a specific unresolved issue from the past. Some individuals benefit from having a combination of psychotherapy and life coaching to help them move forward in life, especially if they weren’t sure how to do so before talking to either professional.
Why Is Life Coaching Useful?
Life coaching can be beneficial in many circumstances. For example, if you are trying to navigate a career change, you are feeling unfulfilled, or you are going through a divorce, a life coach can make a powerful impact.
If you are dealing with blocked creativity, feelings of irritability, and dissatisfaction in your career, a life coach may be just what you need to free up your mindset and take things to the next level.
Life coaches hold their clients accountable and help them see what they can reasonably achieve in a specific amount of time. Life coaches help their clients identify the root of their problems through in-depth and thought-provoking questions.
Your mindset is your mental inclination. It drives the decisions, choices, and habits that guide your life. A life coach can help you fix an unhealthy mindset and make wise decisions that lead to a positive tomorrow.
