IT giant Atos has told Bulgaria’s Sofia Tech Park that it has fully delivered a supercomputer that is expected to be the most powerful such device in Eastern Europe.

Petascale computing systems will greatly help Bulgaria’s technical ambitions in the coming years.

Supercomputers are used in a variety of disciplines such as bioinformatics, pharmacies, molecular and mechanical dynamics, quantum chemistry and biochemistry, artificial intelligence, personalized medicine, bioengineering, meteorology, and the fight against climate change in science, public and industry. Useful for application development.

Atos, a supercomputer provider, said in a press release that the computer will be fully operational in July 2021.

“This is the most powerful supercomputer in Eastern Europe and will help us to harness the high-tech ambitions of Bulgaria. The supercomputer is co-funded by the EuroHPCJU program of the Republic of Bulgaria and the European Union. The total investment is 11.5 million euros.

Bulgarian petascale computing systems are similar to other supercomputing systems in universities and research centers across Europe, such as CINECA in Italy, IZUM in Slovenia, and Lux ​​Provide in the Si Minho Advanced Computing Center in Portugal.

Therefore, the computing systems in Bulgaria will consolidate the EU’s network of research capabilities and step up efforts to develop new technology and research hubs in Member States.
